Automobile accident lawyers, boat accident lawyers, and motorcycle accident lawyers all have unique experience and familiarity with causation and statistics for their specific fields. When it comes to a tractor-trailer accident attorney, there is no difference.
We are often asked about trucking accident statistics – such as drug use – and how frequently they are involved in trucking accident litigation. Fortunately, the US Department of Transportation has provided the statistics for us, and some of the more surprising statistics are discussed below.
In 2012, 3921 people were killed and 104,000 people were injured in crashes involving large trucks. In the United States, 333,000 large trucks were involved in traffic crashes during 2012.
Alcohol & illegal drug use are not the most common causes for truck accidents.
Most people believe that alcohol or illegal drug use are disproportionately responsible for a large number of car accidents in general, and trucking accidents specifically. However, a US Department of Transportation report to Congress was able to evaluate the top 20 factors contributing to tractor-trailer accidents.
Many people are surprised to learn that illegal drug use and/or alcohol use only contributed to 3.1% of trucking accidents in the study. Illegal drug use contributed to 2.3% of the accidents, and alcohol use contributed to only .8% of the accidents surveyed.
The most common causes of truck accidents are…
While illegal drugs may not have been a major factor, prescription drugs were the single greatest contributing factor to tractor-trailer accidents at 26.3%. The next closest percentage was for “traveling too fast for conditions” at 22.9%. Another commonly believed determining cause, fatigue, only contributed to 13% of accidents, while “over-the-counter drug use” contributed to 17.3% of accidents.
