Unfortunately, people come to see me because they have been hurt on the job and need advice or representation about their workers’ compensation claim. Generally, people aren’t happy to have to be walking into a lawyer’s office at all. They don’t come to see me because they are buying a new home or getting a new car. They’re hurt, often confused about their rights, and frequently seeking a benefit that is not being provided. I believe that I help them and provide a quality service, but it is my privilege to get to know some amazing individuals and help them through a broken legal system (that’s a story for another day). I help people every day, and I feel good at night when I go home. But that’s not the best part of my day.
One of the wonderful aspects of representing injured workers is the diversity of people that I get to meet. Not just diversity of race and ethnicity, but diversity of economy. I have the unique opportunity to interact on a daily basis with people from every walk of life and every job imaginable. This past week I had the opportunity to spend the day with a member of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Department. We were mediating his case together for six hours. During that time, we obviously discussed his claim, but we also shared a lot of details about ourselves, and I got the privilege to learn more about him beyond his workers’ compensation claim. Each day that I get to learn a little more about my community by learning more about its people is a good day. That mediation was a good day.
