It’s never too early to start looking into your retirement options. As you begin your retirement journey, there are some things you should know before getting started on your social security benefits application. The Michles & Booth, P.A. is here to help you better understand what these benefits are and how long it takes to receive them.
Social Security Benefits
There are three types of social security benefits—retirement, survivor, and disability. To qualify for these benefits, you mostly need to have worked for at least ten years and need to have earned at least 40 Social Security credits. It’s important to note that the number of credits you have does not affect your benefits. These credits are simply used to determine your eligibility for retirement or disability and survivor benefits.
If you do not have enough credits, you cannot earn benefits. You can visit the Social Security Administration page to better understand how these credits are earned.
Application Timeline
In order to begin the application process, one must prepare and gather the correct documentation, complete the application, and then submit it. Once your application is in, the SSA will review your application and contact you if they need more information.
As of right now, it typically takes six weeks to process a benefits application; however, this is only if it’s submitted correctly. If you submit the incorrect information, you should expect delays. You must wait five months to receive your first SSDI benefit check. This means you will most likely receive your first payment around six months after the date your disability began.
