Our attorney team at Michles & Booth is proud to announce the winners of the 2021 Marcus R. Michles JROTC Scholarship: Cadet Col. Gavin Carden of Choctawhatchee High School and Cadet LTC Kathryn Dunn of Crestview High School.
This year’s competition was held virtually May 5 to accommodate students’ in-school schedules and COVID-19 rules and regulations. Each candidate for the scholarship was required to submit an essay and be interviewed by a judging panel comprising:
- Mr. Tom Rice, owner of Magnolia Grill-Fort Walton Beach and First Sgt. United States Army, Retired
- Ms. Ann Jenkins, Technical Advisor at Eglin Air Force Base
- Ms. Ginny Wosak, AFSOC Stan/Eval Aircrew Controller III at Duke Field Air Force Base
Two cadets from every Okaloosa County high school—Baker High School, Choctawhatchee High School, Crestview High School, Fort Walton Beach High School, and Niceville High School— were nominated to compete by JROTC leadership. Needless to say, the judging panel had quite a quality candidate pool to sift through. Still, Cadet Col. Carden shone brightly and came in first place, earning the $3000 scholarship. Cadet LTC Dunn also demonstrated impressive potential and placed second, earning $2000 in scholarship money.
The Marcus R. Michles JROTC Scholarship was initially dreamt up by Attorney Christopher Janes, managing partner of our Fort Walton Beach and Crestview offices. In collaboration with Attorney Marcus J. Michles II, our firm’s founding partner, it was decided that the scholarship would be named for Attorney Michles’ father who served three tours in Vietnam. The Michles Family Freedom Foundation has awarded the scholarship to deserving JROTC cadets since 2014, making a name for itself for providing financial assistance to the families of military service members, law enforcement, and first responders.
“These are all, by and large, great kids,” Attorney Michles said of the Marcus R. Michles JROTC Scholars. “I am amazed at how selfless they are and how they never lose sight of their goals.”
